Granite Falls continues its climb up the conference standings

LANGLEY — One team continued its climb. The other continued its slump.

Granite Falls won its second straight Cascade Conference match, defeating South Whidbey 18-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 Tuesday and moving into sole possession of third place in the conference.

South Whidbey (2-3 in league and overall) lost its third straight conference match after starting the season with back-to-back victories.

Behind their heavy hitters, the Tigers bounced back from a 14-11 deficit in the fourth game before chipping away and then overtaking the Falcons.

“They put the ball away. (Michaela Dudder) hits the ball real well. She hits from anywhere and does a real good job all around,” South Whidbey head coach Tim Durbin said.

Dudder led the Tigers with 22 kills and 10 digs and Kerry Wesala added 11 digs. Audrey Murphy added eight kills for Granite Falls (3-2, 3-2).

South Whidbey was led by Allison Wood’s seven kills and six aces.

“Wood had some good serves. She did a good job,” Durbin said, “We passed a lot better than we have been. We did a really nice job playing defense, had better passing. I thought we scrapped real well.”

Kelsie Dorpat and Lindsey Newman each had nine assists for the Falcons.

King’s 3, Sultan 0: At Shoreline, King’s (5-0 league and overall) defeated Sultan (0-5, 0-5) 25-3, 25-6, 25-7 in the Cascade Conference match. Jordan Irish had 10 kills and six aces and Kailey Trautmann had six kills and seven aces.

Cedarcrest 3, Coupeville 0: At Cedarcrest, Shannon Bailey had three aces and nine kills and teammate Kristen McKinlay added seven kills as Cedarcrest swept Coupeville (1-4 league, 1-5 overall) 25-12, 25-15, 25-15 in the Cascade Conference game. Amber Shields added three aces and 14 assists for the Red Wolves (4-1, 4-1).

Archbishop Murphy 3, Lakewood 0: At Lakewood, Archbishop Murphy (4-1 in league and overall) swept Lakewood 25-5, 25-18, 25-15 in a Cascade Conference match. Lakewood (1-4, 2-4) was led by Aly Stewart’s five kills and two blocks and Liliya Kibitskaya’s 10 digs. Patti Reeves directed the Archbishop Murphy offense with 19 assists.

La Conner 3, Shoreline Christian 0: At Shoreline, the Braves (5-0 league and overall) won three straight sets 25-18, 25-18, 25-14 to take the Northwest 1A/2B match. Angie DeKoekkoek had eight kills and five blocks, and Kirsten Landis added nine digs for the Crusaders (2-2, 3-3).

Darrington 3, Mount Vernon Christian 0: At Mount Vernon, the Loggers won the first game easily before holding on for the sweep in the Northwest 1A/2B match. “We played a great first game, and Mount Vernon Christian played tough in the second and third game,” Darrington head coach Greg Powell said. “The (Darrington) girls played real hard in the third game to finish it out.” Mandy Powell had 20 assists and five aces for Darrington (4-1 league, 5-1 overall). Maggie Wicken added six kills and five aces and Karissa Clark was a perfect 12-of-12 serving. Mount Vernon Christian fell to 0-3.

Snohomish Red team 3, Grace Academy 1: At Marysville, Katie Mittelstaedt had nine kills, Jasleen Kaler was 10-for-10 serving and Crystal Holmes had three blocks to lead Grace Academy (1-3 overall) in the 25-17, 25-16, 18-25, 25-13 non-league loss.

Highland Christian 3, Cedar Park Christian-Everett 1: At Everett, Highland Christian dropped the first set 18-25 before winning the next three 25-12, 25-21, 25-16 to win the Northwest 1B League match. Highland Christian (2-2 league, 2-3 overall) was led by the 13 kills of Chelsey Graber, the 14 digs of Brittany Chase and Aly Hodges’ six aces. CPC-Everett dropped to 0-2 in league and overall.
