Everett’s high-profile players sat this one out as they were given the day off. But one returner who did play was Jari Erricson, and he put on a show by tallying three goals and two assists as Grey dominated. Erricson was easily the best player on the ice, and his two gorgeous passes to set up goals
were an element he didn’t show he had last season as a 16-year-old rookie. Granted, he was one of just six returning players who took part, so he should have excelled. But none of the other returners stood head and shoulders above the rest the way Erricson did.
Erricson spent many a shift lined up opposite Carson Samoridny, and Samoridny played his part with a goal and three assists. Samoridny has an interesting mix of size and skill, and the 17-year-old rookie certainly didn’t hurt his chances of making the team.
Everett’s heir apparent goaltender, 17-year-old Andy Desautels, struggled today, stopping just six of the 10 shots he faced. Desautels better be careful because 16-year-old Austin Lotz is lurking following a solid camp.
After the game the Tips made another round of cuts, reassigning 18 players to get down to 36 total. No real surprises among that group, though I’ll miss watching 16-year-old playmaker Carson Stadnyk (see you next year, kid). It’s good to see Josh Racek play himself into next week. The 17-year-old winger, at least according to Alan Caldwell’s summer prospect list, was no longer on Everett’s protected list. But he played well during camp, and if he did indeed drop off the list it’s good to see him earn a second chance.
CORRECTION — Oops. I’ve just been informed Josh Racek should have been on the cut list. Oh well.
