EVERETT — Last season Shane Harper shared the Everett Silvertips’ Most Valuable Player award.
This season he kept it to himself.
Harper took home the big prize during Everett’s year-end awards ceremony following Saturday night’s game at Comcast Arena, being named Everett’s MVP for the second consecutive season.
Harper, an overage winger from Valencia, Calif., shared MVP honors with defenseman Taylor Ellington last season. But Harper raised his game another level this season. Going into Saturday night’s game he led the team in both goals (40) and points (76).
The MVP award is just the latest in a string of milestones for Harper. This season he set franchise records for games played, goals in a season and goals in a career. Earlier this month he was rewarded by signing an entry-level contract with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers.
Harper also received an Iron Man award as he’s appeared in all 71 of Everett’s games this season. Harper has a consecutive games played streak of 213, which is also a franchise record.
In other awards, defenseman Ryan Murray was named Everett’s Rookie of the Year. The 16-year-old had five goals and 22 assists in 50 games, and despite playing first-pairing minutes as a rookie was a plus-31.
Center Clayton Cumiskey received the Unsung Hero award. The 19-year-old Cumiskey has been an effective two-way forward since arriving via trade in late December, racking up seven goals and 16 assists in 34 games with the Tips.
Defenseman Alex Theriau was named the Most Improved Player. The 1992-born defenseman had four goals and 20 assists in 68 games.
Center Zack Dailey received the Coaches Award for best utilization of instruction. Everett’s overage captain had nine goals and 28 assists in 68 games. Dailey also won the Community Relations Award for his involvement with schools, non-profits and around the community.
Defenseman Radko Gudas won the F.I.E.R.C.E. Predator Award, presented by the booster club for fortitude, resolve and perseverance on and off the ice. The 19-year-old Gudas had seven goals and 28 assists in 63 games and was a revelation because of his big hits.
Seventeen-year-old goaltender Kent Simpson was named Everett’s Scholastic Player of the Year.
Gudas (who only missed games while away at the World Junior Hockey Championships) and 1991-born wingers Tyler Maxwell and Kellan Tochkin were also given Iron Man awards.
