It’s been smooth sailing for these young Admirals so far, but mind yer helm mate, the journey’s just begun.

The Mountlake Terrace-based Seattle Junior Hockey Association NW Admirals Midget AA and Pee Wee AAA teams have earned Washington State Championship titles and will move on to the USA Hockey Pacific District competition starting Thursday in California.

The Midget AA team, composed of 15-17-year-olds, outscored its opponents 47-4 in the state tournament, capping its effort with an 8-0 victory over Sno-King AHA at Vancouver on March 3.

“It’s a very young group that has done extremely well,” said Rick Ellison, athletic director of Seattle Junior Hockey.

Brian Morgan of Lynnwood led the Midget Admirals offensively, while goalie Andy Stricker of Mountlake Terrace was stellar in the net.

The Pee Wee AAA unit, made up of 12-year-olds, skated past the Evergreen Select team 4-1 at OlympicView Arena in Mountlake Terrace on March 4 in front of a crowd estimated at 700.

Gerry Holland of Mill Creek sparkled up front for the Pee Wee Admirals and goalie Kevin Maile of Snohomish kept Evergreen in check.

“These kids have grown up in this program and it’s great to see this kind of support,” Ellison said. “Youth hockey is really about family and community, and it was very special.”
