Holt leads Lincoln to semifinal

TACOMA – Oregon State-bound Justin Holt’s 26 points and 11 rebounds led defending champion Lincoln to a 67-48 quarterfinal win over Garfield Thursday night at the 4A boys basketball state tournament.

Holt won his individual battle against University of Washington signee Brandon Roy, who scored 18 points and had nine rebounds but was just 6-for-17 from the field.

Holt was 9-for-14 from the field and hit eight of 13 free-throw attempts for the Abes (25-2). He has scored 57 points in two games.

The Bulldogs (21-4) played without second-leading scorer Marceles Kemp. The senior forward headed for Nevada broke his right ankle in Garfield’s opener against Shadle Park.

Ben Shelton added 15 points and Robert Crawford 14 for the Abes. Marques Echols chipped in nine points for Garfield. The Bulldogs shot 35 percent (19-for-54) from the field.

Garfield trailed 26-25 at halftime, but the Abes got hot in the second half, hitting 13 of 19 field-goal attempts. Lincoln led 42-35 after three periods, but outscored Garfield 12-4 to start the fourth quarter and made 14 free throws in the final period.

Enumclaw 61, Franklin 50: At Tacoma, senior guard Ryan Clyde scored 22 points and Craig Schweikl added 14 for Enumclaw. The Hornets (25-2), who are looking for their first state title, shot 51 percent from the field.

Chewelah 62, Nooksack Valley 51: At Yakima, Andy Belzer scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to help defending champion Chewelah outscore Nooksack Valley 24-12 in the period.

Grandview 55, Port Townsend 42: At Yakima, Phillip Candanoza scored a game-high 23 points, 15 on 3-pointers, for unbeaten Grandview. The Greyhounds (25-0) pulled out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter and were never headed. Port Townsend (17-8) never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Chelan 43, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 42: At Yakima, Kye Beaton’s 8-foot baseline jumper with 11 seconds remaining capped a Chelan comeback.

Lynden Christian 75, Ephrata 67 (OT): At Yakima, Kevin Kooy scored the first four points in overtime for Lynden Christian. Kooy had six of the Lyncs’ first eight points of the extra period, in which Lynden Christian outscored the Tigers 10-2.

Girls basketball

Kentlake 54, Kennewick 53: At Tacoma, Kristin Pasley hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer, giving Kentlake a quarterfinal win.

Ferris 53, Enumclaw 50: At Tacoma, Jacki Albi led Ferris with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Saxons (21-7) qualified for their first semifinal appearance since 1996, when they were third. The Hornets (24-3), who were fourth in last season’s tournament, shot just 29 percent from the field.

Central Valley 76, Redmond 60: At Tacoma, senior center Felice Moore scored 20 points to lead defending champion Central Valley. Moore, who is headed for Eastern Washington, was 10-for-17 from the field and had a game-high 13 rebounds for the Bears (27-0) in a rematch of last year’s title game.

Prairie 51, Richland 35: At Tacoma, Prairie grabbed an 11-0 lead and was never threatened. Point guard Breann Sitton, who is a University of Idaho signee, led the Falcons (25-2) with 18 points on 9-for-15 shooting. Prairie is two wins away from its fifth state title in nine years.

Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 57, Nooksack Valley 42: At Yakima, Jen Barcus had game-highs of 15 points and eight rebounds for Lakeside. The Eagles trailed Nooksack Valley 8-4 after one quarter, but erupted for a 21-5 run in the second period.

East Valley-Yakima 55, Woodland 31: Elyse Mengarelli scored 13 points Angie Iback had 12 and Meghann Smith scored 10 to lead the Red Devils.

Tenino 45, Ephrata 44: At Yakima, Whitney Evander’s two free throws with 13 seconds left gave Tenino a victory.
