Hot Hurricanes blow by Silvertips

LETHBRIDGE, Alberta — The Everett Silvertips have been hot, but Wednesday night they ran into a team even hotter.

The streaking Lethbridge Hurricanes scored goals on either side of the second intermission to snap a tie, and the Silvertips fell 4-1 in the fifth game of their seven-game road trip.

Everett came into the game having won three straight and 11 of its past 14.

However, Lethbridge entered with an even better streak, its only loss in its previous seven coming in a shootout. Goals by Adam Chorneyko at the end of the second period and Jacob Dietrich at the start of the third made sure it was the Hurricanes who continued their streak.

Zach Boychuk also scored and Mitch Fadden added an empty netter for Lethbridge (11-7-1-1). Michael Maniago earned the win in goal, making 20 saves.

Dane Crowley scored the lone goal for Everett (11-8-0-0) and Leland Irving stopped 19 shots in net for the Tips.

An evenly-played game was tied 1-1 until Everett took three straight penalties in the second half of the second period. Lethbridge scored on the second of those when, on a scramble in front, the puck bounced around the crease and into the net. The goal was credited to Chorneyko, giving the Hurricanes the lead with 42 seconds remaining in the period.

Lethbridge then secured its lead with a goal 2:47 into the third period. The Hurricanes broke two-on-one, with Dan Iwanski sending a perfect feed for Dietrich to bang in and make 3-1.

Fadden put the puck into an empty net with 24 seconds remaining to polish off the scoring.

For the second straight night Everett found itself behind less than two minutes into the game. The Hurricanes received an early power play and took advantage at 1:36, Boychuk skating in from the corner and putting a shot in off the post.

Everett evened it up with a power-play goal of its own at 17:28. Crowley’s wrist shot from the point went through traffic and found the back of the net, making it 1-1.

Everett was missing two key players. Second-leading scorer Dan Gendur (shoulder) and defenseman Taylor Ellington (lower body) were scratched because of injuries. Both are considered questionable for the weekend’s games at Kootenay and Spokane.
