SEATTLE — The University of Washington varsity eight crew teams won the Windermere Cup for the sixth straight year on Saturday at the Montlake Cut with a men’s victory over Argentina’s national team and a women’s win over Gonzaga.
Ranked No. 1 in the latest USRowing poll, the UW men easily won their race on the opening day of boating season with a time of 5 minutes, 45 seconds and an almost 15-second margin of victory over second-place Argentina.
The University of Virginia placed directly behind the Argentines in third at 5:59.9 and Oregon State finished in 6:03.6.
“We had a good start right from the first stroke and let the rest of it go from there,” said Washington senior Rob Munn.
The UW women, ranked No. 6 by USRowing, finished in 6:35.9. Gonzaga was nearly 17 seconds behind with a time of 6:53.6, and Argentina pulled across the finish line at 7:03.5.
The UW men and women will compete in the Pac-12 Championships next week.
