For the second time in three weeks, Steve Sarkisian has added a receivers coach to his staff. Jimmy Dougherty, previously the offensive coordinator at the University of San Diego, a Division I-AA program, was announced as the latest addition to the coaching staff today by the school.
Three of Dougherty’s seasons at San Diego were spent working under current Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh, who was previously the head coach of the Toreros.
Just last month, Sarkisian hired Aaron Roderick away from Utah to become Washington’s receivers coach, but Roderick decided to return to Utah just a few days after Washington announced his hiring.

SEATTLE – Former University of San Diego offensive coordinator Jimmie Dougherty has been hired as wide receivers coach at the University of Washington, Husky football coach Steve Sarkisian announced today.
Dougherty has spent the last five seasons on the coaching staff at the University of San Diego. This past season, he served as the Toreros’ offensive coordinator.
“Jimmie is a bright young coach,” Sarkisian said. “I’m excited to have him on the staff. He’ll do a great job with our wide receiver group.”
Dougherty worked three seasons under former USD and current Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh and the last two under head coach Ron Caragher. Under Harbaugh, he coached the wide receivers for one season and tight ends the next before taking over as quarterbacks coach in 2006. As wide receivers coach, he mentored All-American Mike Gasperson.
While continuing to coach the QBs, he added passing game coordinator to his title for a season before being named offensive coordinator in 2008.
Dougherty coached Josh Johnson, a fifth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who left USD having broken every school passing record. As a senior, Johnson threw 43 touchdowns and only one interception and he completed his career with 9,699 yards, 113 TDs and an NCAA-record pass efficiency of 176.7.
In 2007, the Toreros led the nation in passing efficiency (197.35) and Johnson led the nation in total offense for the second straight season. In 2008, as coordinator, Dougherty led a unit that was fifth in the FCS in pass efficiency and was 11th in scoring .
Prior to moving to San Diego, he was a graduate assistant at Illinois Wesleyan from 2002 to 2004.
Dougherty played quarterback at Missouri from 1997-2001, winning three letters for the Tigers. A native of Edwardsville, Ill., he graduated from Missouri in 2001 and earned a master’s degree from Illinois State in 2004.
The Huskies still have one opening in their assistant coaching staff.
