INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis 500 rookies Mike Conway and Alex Tagliani have crashed in separate accidents.
Sunday’s practice had barely started when Conway appeared to go too low in the second turn and spun, slamming hard into the wall. Conway, a 25-year-old Englishman, was admitted to an Indianapolis hospital to be treated for bruised lungs. A track medical spokesman said Conway was awake, alert and in good condition.
Minutes after the track was reopened for practice, Tagliani lost control in the same turn and hit the wall. Tagliani was released from the track hospital and cleared to drive.
The second round of qualifying for the May 24 race began later Sunday, with 11 of the 33 starting positions up for grabs. Helio Castroneves was the fastest of the first 11 qualifiers on Saturday.
