INDIANAPOLIS — The Lone Star State will have its own team at Saturday night’s IndyCar race at Texas Motor Speedway.
Owner A.J. Foyt has hired his grandson, A.J. Foyt IV, to drive the No. 14 car. Both Foyts are Texas residents.
The four-time Indianapolis 500 winner has changed drivers twice since Vitor Meira broke two vertebrae in his back during a scary crash at Indy. Meira is expected to miss three to four months but is not scheduled for surgery.
Last week, Foyt replaced Meira with longtime veteran Paul Tracy in the No. 14 car at the Milwaukee Mile. Tracy finished 17th, six laps behind race winner Scott Dixon.
Foyt isn’t the only owner making a change.
Team 3G, co-owned by Greg Beck, Steve Sudler and Stanton Barrett, will replace Barrett in the cockpit with veteran Jaques Lazier. Lazier has not started an IndyCar race since May 2007 when he finished 27th at Indy, and he has competed in only two races since 2006.
Conquest Racing also announced it would return this week with driver Alex Tagliani in its car.
