It’s anyone’s race at Evergreen Speedway

MONROE – In five weeks of racing at Evergreen Speedway, one thing is becoming clear: This is shaping up to be one of the more competitive seasons in recent track history.

There has yet to be a repeat winner in any division, and this week the Super Stock division could get even tougher as five-time series champion Tom Moriarity is expected to come out of retirement to compete in the Matt Murphy owned car. In addition, rookies Naima Lang, the defending Bombers champion, and Jason Fraser have had strong finishes and look to join John Zaretzke, Shane Harding and Gaylon Stewart in the winner’s circle.

Zaretzke continues to lead the Super Stock points race with 144, followed closely by Stewart (136) and Fraser (132). Zaretzke and Stewart have each been in the top five in all three races.

Lang leads the Bombers class with 213 points despite never crossing the line first, but only 10 points separate the top five, which includes Darin Stordahl, Brad Sweeney, Steve McElroy and Steve Ptacek. Four different drivers have won a race this season, including Craig Rowalt last week.

Scott shows no FEAR: Greg Scott won the 12th annual 60 Minutes of FEAR for the Super Figure Eights last week, the second time Scott has won the race. Scott beat 28 racers after completing 140 laps in an hour.

Mayor’s Cup this week: Snohomish County city governments will be represented Saturday at Evergreen for the third running of the Mayor’s Cup. KRKO radio personality Jeff Aaron, who won the race representing the Everett Mayor’s office last year, is back to defend his title.

The track will also celebrate opening day of boating season with a boat race, in which cars tow boats through the Figure Eight track.

The Super Stocks, Bombers, Northwest Legends, Extreme Contract Figure Eights, Stinger 8’s and Hornets will also run. Qualifying begins at 3:45 p.m., heats are at 5 and main events start at 7.

Crash mars Skagit race: Defending champion Andy Jacobson was injured in the 360 A Main race last Saturday at Skagit Speedway, though he walked away with just a broken wrist. Jacobson was racing eventual winner Brandon Harkness when he hopped the wheel of a lapped car and crashed into the billboards above the turn one fence. He was transported to the hospital and released the same night. Jacobson was to have surgery Wednesday to repair his wrist and is likely out 2-6 weeks.

Harkness took over the 360 points lead with the win.

Marc Huson passed Gary Vaugh on the outside of lap 5 and led the final 20 laps to win the 410 A main, his first win of the season. Kyle Johnson finished second.

In the Sportsman Sprint division, Seth Bergman won his first main, leading all 20 laps. Brett Lloyd won the track’s first-ever Hornet main by passing Clayton Delano on lap 18.

The 410s, 360s, Sportsmans and Hornets will race this week. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30.
