Jackson debuts in 4A tennis with Wesco win over M. Terrace

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – The Jackson Timberwolves, a perennial boys tennis power in the former Western Conference 3A, will soon find out if that reputation will survive the migration to 4A play as part of the newly expanded Western Conference.

Jackson opened its league season Wednesday with a 7-0 win over Mountlake Terrace. On Friday, the Timberwolves will face a more difficult test when they host Shorewood, a 7-0 winner over Lynnwood on Wednesday.

“Mountlake Terrace has a young team and a small program”, Jackson head coach David Hutt said. “I figure that it will be Jackson, Kamiak, Meadowdale, and Shorewood at the top of the league”

Jackson returns a number of players from last season’s squad. Familiar names such as the Pope twins, Kris and Kory, were among the winners in Wednesday’s match. But it was the play of freshman Alex Yee that pleased Hutt.

“Alex played as our No. 2 singles player,” Hutt said. “He could easily be the No. 1 and he might be on Friday”

To move to that slot, Yee would have to displace veteran David Chong, a sign of how strong and deep the Timberwolves might be.

Cascade 6, Oak Harbor 1: The Bruins won a hard-fought match at Oak Harbor to open Wesco North Division play.

Meadowdale 7, Shorecrest 0: Meadowdale picked up a road win as the Marauders swept past Shorecrest in Wesco play.

Stanwood 5, Marysville-Pilchuck 2: Stanwood’s Mike Carlson breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles to lead the Spartans.

Shorewood 7, Lynnwood 0: Shorewood had an easy time, capturing all seven matches in a Wesco South Division opener for both teams. Jeff Jablonski was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles for the T-birds.

Edmonds-Woodway 6, Everett 1: Josh Yuse earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles for the Warriors. Sean Hirst posted the only win for Everett in the Wesco South Division opener for both schools.

Kamiak 7, Mariner 0: Marc Rollins won consecutive 6-0 sets against Nguyen Trinh at No. 1 singles as Kamiak opened its Wesco North season with a shutout of Mariner. The Knights lost just 11 games in the meet.

Lynnwood 4, Anacortes 1: Lynnwood opened the season on Tuesday with a non-conference win at Anacortes.

Speedy freshman Sarah Smart scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead a young Lynnwood squad. Smart opened the scoring in the seventh minute on an assist from Kim Dahm, then assisted on a goal eight minutes later by Sarah Owen that proved to be the eventual game winner.

Smart later picked up an unassisted goal. Kari Lloyd closed out Lynnwood’s scoring with an assist by Smart.

Bothell 6, Interlake 0: Carly Sawhill scored a hat trick, including two unassisted goals, as Bothell blanked Interlake in a non-league season opener. Sawhill, a senior, also picked up an assist. Teammate Leah Wymer scored an unassisted goal and an assist.

Goals-Bothell: Sawhill (3), Bathurst, Englund. Goalkeepers-Bothell: Lund. Interlake: not listed. Records-Interlake, 0-1 overall. Bothell 1-0.

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Edmonds-Woodway 2: At Edmonds, Marysville-Pilchuck needed five sets to get past Edmonds-Woodway, 6-15, 15-11, 15-8, 9-15, 15-9, in the Wesco cross-over season opener. M-P’s Mariko Coverdale posted 18 kills.

Oak Harbor 3, Meadowdale 2: At Oak Harbor, Meadowdale lost a hard fought non-conference match at Oak Harbor , 15-13, 12-15, 4-15, 15-9, 15-12. Celeste Gary had 13 kills for the Wildcats. Mera Dermendjiera had 40 assists for Meadowdale, while teammate Lauren Marty had 17 kills.
