SHORELINE – The Jackson boys tennis team needed a win Wednesday to keep alive their hopes of earning a piece of the Western Conference South title.
Julio Rojas rallied from a set down to win the No. 4 singles match, sealing a 5-2 victory for the Timberwolves over Shorewood at Shoreview Park and setting up a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown on Friday with Wesco South leader Edmonds-Woodway.
After the Thunderbirds’ Andy Stern won the first set of the No. 4 singles match 6-0, Rojas battled back to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-2, securing a Jackson sweep of the four singles matches.
“(Julio) showed great competitiveness and desire to come back like that,” Jackson head coach David Hutt said.
Jackson improved to 14-1 with the victory – its only loss a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Edmonds-Woodway on Sept. 22 – and can gain a share of the Wesco South title by beating the Warriors (15-0) at home on Friday.
Shorewood (10-5) moved its top two singles players, Spencer Mestel and Jesse Knutson, into the No. 1 doubles slot where they combined for a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
