EVERETT – Jackson girls soccer coach Mike Bartley knows what it takes to win a state championship.
After all, he won four titles in five appearances as the coach of the Meadowdale girls soccer team back in the late ’90s.
On Tuesday, he guided his Timberwolves to their first victory in school history in the Class 4A state tournament by defeating Gig Harbor 1-0 at Everett Memorial Stadium.
“I’ve been here a few times,” Bartley said. “I am very proud of the girls. They (Timberwolves) have a lot of the same characteristics as my teams at Meadowdale. When I got here, I knew they had the talent, they just needed to get more organized.”
The Timberwolves (13-4-1 overall), who’ve won three straight games and seven of their past eight, play the winner of tonight’s Redmond vs. South Kitsap game in the quarterfinals this weekend. Gig Harbor, which was making its third straight state appearance, finished the season 13-3-3.
Freshman Kristi Kingma, with a Gig Harbor defender matching her stride for stride, drove a shot past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Amber Wittmers from 9 yards out for the game’s lone goal. It was Kingma’s fifth goal of the season and Jackson’s sixth victory by a one-goal margin.
“They are a very tough team,” said Gig Harbor coach Todd Northstrom, whose team had won two consecutive first-round state playoff games entering Tuesday’s match. “They (Timberwolves) scored early and then they came out and played great defense against us. In those first 10 minutes, we couldn’t get to the ball and that hurt us.”
Jackson goalkeeper Dee Wood came up with three key saves in the second half en route to recording her eighth shutout. Jackson out-shot Gig Harbor 8-6.
“This is as far as this team has ever gone at state, and it’s just great to be a part of it,” Wood said. “The defense played excellent throughout the game, but in the second half, they really stepped up.”
The Jackson defense, thanks in part to a solid defensive performance by senior defender Katie Waldin, kept Gig Harbor from penetrating deep into the Jackson zone in the final 30 minutes. Gig Harbor midfielder Kelly Irving got off two shots in a three-minute span near the end of the game, but on both occasions, Wood was there for Jackson.
“The most important thing to have is a great goaltender,” Bartley said. “And we have that in Dee. Our defense also played great.”

“It has been a great season. We have a lot of returning players for next year. I’m very proud of my players,” Monroe coach Kathleen Potthast said.
Monroe out-shot Stadium 21-13 and Kayla Wangner had another terrific game in goal for Monroe, but it wasn’t enough for the ‘Cats, who lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.
