Jackson wins game between pre-season division favorites

SNOHOMISH – In a battle of preseason Wesco division favorites, the Jackson girls basketball team got the better of Snohomish 48-44 in the season opener for both teams.

Sophomore guards Ashley Todd (14 points) and Kristi Kingma (13) led the Timberwolves’ attack.

Daesha Henderson’s impressive 28-point effort was not enough to offset the effort of the two Jackson guards.

After jumping out to an early lead that held through three quarters, Snohomish coach Ken Roberts said the Panthers nerves gave Jackson an opening and the T-Wolves outscored Snohomish 19-13 in the final quarter to cement the victory. Ashly Bruns scored all seven of her points in the second half to key the comeback.

Henderson was all over the court, grabbing six rebounds and throwing in four assists for good effort as the SPU-bound guard carried the young Snohomish team, which made some first game mistakes.

“It’s kind of like a mother bird pushing the baby birds out of their nests,” Snohomish coach Ken Roberts said. “Sometimes their wings are flapping. We missed a lot of easy shots but we’re young.”

“It was a fun exciting first game for both teams,” said Roberts. “Every year I tell the girls that we base how we play on our effort.
