Kamiak fields another great QB

EVERETT – Every fall, the leaves turn colors, the days grow shorter and Kamiak High School finds another fantastic quarterback.

This year’s heir apparent, Mark Iddins, out-dueled Jackson’s Chris Bowen in Kamiak’s 28-9 Western Conference South Division victory Friday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Iddins, who stepped into the hand-me-down shoes of four straight Knights quarterbacks who went on to play some form of college football, completed 17 of 26 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns to knock off the defending division champions.

“It’s exciting, but I can’t take all the credit,” said Iddins, a senior who played behind current Washington State University freshman quarterback Gary Rogers the past two seasons. “The offensive line did a great job, and we’ve got probably the best receiving corps ever at Kamiak.”

Iddins misfired on six of his first 10 attempts, but completed his final seven passes, including three TDs, that pulled the Knights away in a game that was 7-6 at the half.

“It’s nice to have a senior quarterback,” said Kamiak coach Dan Mack, whose team has begun its season with two victories over teams that played in the postseason last year. “Mark has prepared himself for this moment.”

The Timberwolves (1-1) provided fireworks of their own, outgaining Kamiak 399 offensive yards to 389, but sputtered deep in Kamiak territory. Bowen, who threw last season only to provide shock value to contrast the carries of since-graduated running back Johnie Kirton, completed 17 of 33 passes for 209 yards. The yards came despite the second-half absence of arguably Jackson’s best athlete – receiver, safety, kick returner and punter Richie Tri – who suffered an elbow injury of unknown severity.

The Knights’ defense stiffened when it counted, holding the Timberwolves to three Nathin Bruns field goals. Kamiak’s Chris Munoz also forced a goal-line fumble to stall the first of Jackson’s four trips inside Kamiak’s 20.

“Things just kept going wrong,” Bowen sighed. “Penalties, missed blocks, dropped balls, bad passes – everything. We just need to go the full distance.”

Shawn Klaus led Jackson’s ground attack with 78 yards on seven carries. Tight end Rory Wilson, one of seven Timberwolves to catch at least one pass, made four catches for 76 yards.

For Kamiak, Rebel Hall caught seven passes for 62 yards. Tony Virata added 64 yards rushing and 67 receiving yards.
