Kamiak knocks off district rival Mariner, 4-2

EVERETT – Rebel had a cause.

Led by senior forward Rebel Hall, the Kamiak Knights boys soccer team defeated the Mariner Mauraders 4-2 in a Wesco South game Wednesday night at Goddard Stadium.

Hall, who scored the final two goals and had an assist, was on a mission, leading the Knights to their first victory over Mariner in his four years.

“It feels good, we have never beat these guys since I have been here,” Hall said.

“It is fantastic,” Knights third-year coach Garfield Scott said. “Each year we have been getting closer and closer and we pulled this one out.”

Hall scored the game-winning goal off a 45-yard free kick by Eric Jasman. Hall stretched out and barely redirected the ball past the Marauders keeper in the 72nd minute. Hall sealed the victory, scoring off a Kelly Haugen pass in the 78th minute.

“I just barely nicked it, I guess I got lucky,” Hall said of the game-winner.

“He is an athletic player and can just make those plays when we need them,” Scott said of Hall.

The physical Mukilteo School District rivalry game produced 34 fouls, seven yellow cards and a player ejection.

After Kamiak lost its captain to a second yellow card, sophomore Iram Inclan scored his first two goals of the season in the 64th and 67th minutes to tie the score 2-2 to give Mariner a fighting chance with 13 minutes to play.

After that Hall took control of the game.

“I felt that we needed another leader out there and I just took the reigns, but it takes 11 guys to get the job done,” Hall said after losing his captain in the 61st minute.

Kamiak (3-0-0 in division, 8-1-0 overall) is in first place in the Wesco South with six games to play. Mariner (1-1-1, 4-3-1) is in a tie for fourth place.

“If we keep our composer, I think we can do well, but you have to take one match at a time,” Scott said.

“If we keep our heads, we can compete with any team out there,” Hall said.

The Mariner Marauders were playing with some adversity with nine players, including six starters, either ineligible or absent due to vacation or injury.
