The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s Executive Board ruled this morning that the Kamiak High School football team must forfeit its wins over Mariner and Lynnwood because of the use of an academically ineligible player.
The decision, which upheld previous rulings at the conference and district levels, dropped the Knights’ Wesco South record from 7-1 to 5-3. They fell from first to fourth place in the division.
The top three Class 4A Wesco South teams advance to the playoffs. Edmonds-Woodway, Jackson and Meadowdale, all 6-2, control those spots entering Friday night’s games.
Kamiak, which plays Mountlake Terrace (1-7) at 8 p.m. Friday at Edmonds District Stadium, holds head-to-head tiebreakers over Jackson and Meadowdale, but both of those teams are favored to win Friday. Jackson plays Everett (5-3) and Meadowdale faces Shorewood (3-5). E-W plays Mariner, which improved to 4-4 thanks to the reversal of Kamiak’s 31-14 Sept. 24 victory.
Kamiak’s second forfeit boosted previously winless Lynnwood to 1-7 and ended the Class 3A Royals’ state-record tying 46-game losing streak. Lynnwood’s skid actually stopped at 42, with Kamiak’s 49-7 Oct. 1 victory reversed.
