Kamiak wins in triple OT

MARYSVILLE – It took 12 extra minutes to decide the winner of Saturday’s 4A District 1 consolation girls basketball game between Shorewood and Kamiak.

That’s three extra periods for those counting at home.

In a game full of twists and turns, Kamiak came out on top 75-68, and advanced to play Lake Stevens at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Marysville-Pilchuch High School.

“We had a strong first half,” Kamiak head coach Branda Anderson said.

The excitement began late in the fourth quarter when Shorewood went on a 15-4 run, culminating with a Jane Fleck 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to force overtime.

In the first overtime period, Becky Farden single-handedly propelled Shorewood to a three-point lead. But the Knights battled back behind Kelsey Patrick, who had six of Kamiak’s seven points in the period.

Patrick was the heroine again in the second overtime, hitting a game-saving 3, forcing a third overtime.

In between overtime periods Coach Anderson stressed to “play Kamiak basketball” by “taking care of the ball.”

The final overtime period belonged to the Knights, who went on an 8-2 run to finish the game, thanks to six points by Julia Church.

“Anything can happen,” Anderson said. “I’m incredibly proud of my girls. They fought incredibly hard and it’s a testament to who they are.”

Patrick finished with 27 points to lead Kamiak.

“She took control of the game for us,” Anderson said. “Especially in overtime.”

Nicole Bozek had 13 points and Church added 10 points to help the Knights win the marathon game.

Anderson’s not worried that the long game will affect her players later on in the tournament.

“The pure excitement of getting a win at districts; that should get us ready,” she said.

On the other side, the tandem of Farden and Fleck finished with 38 of Shorewood’s 68 points. Both players had 19 points, to keep the Thunderbirds in the game.

“Those Shorewood kids did not give up. They fought incredibly hard,” Anderson said.
