Kentwood challenged by Monroe

BOTHELL – The Monroe Bearcats gave Kentwood its first challenge of the 2006-7 girls basketball season.

The Conquerors were up to the task, winning the non-conference Oh Boy Oberto Classic game 70-62 Thursday at Bothell High. But the contest bore no resemblance to Kentwood’s first four games this season.

“I was really pleased,” Monroe coach Alan Dickson said.

Dickson also said if he had been able to play guard Sarah Morton more than four minutes a period because of a medical recommendation, the outcome might even have been closer. Morton is coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

“She scored 16 points in 16 minutes,” Dickson said.

Kentwood came into the game with a 52-point average margin of victory. The Conquerors had scored 101, 94 and 98 points, respectively, in their past three contests.

They gradually increased their lead over the Bearcats from five points after one period to 16 after three. But Monroe closed the gap in the final quarter.

Monroe suffered a setback early in the second half when forward Jordan Battle left the game after breaking two small bones in her right (shooting) hand. She had seven rebounds to that point in the game.
