King’s clinches state berth

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – Not many teams, professional, collegiate or high school make 15 straight tournament appearances.

Add the King’s girls basketball team to the elite list that has.

Friday night, the Knights qualified for their 15th straight 1A girls state tournament, knocking off Vashon Island 62-42 in a winner-to-state 1A/B-District tournament game.

Playing without starter Sarah Strand, King’s duo of Bianca Rowland and Danielle Clauson more than made up for Strand’s absence. Strand, who averages 16 points and eight rebounds per game, sat out because of illness.

King’s entered the second quarter up eight points. Clauson hit two 3-pointers and scored 10 of her 13 points while Rowland scored nine of her game-high 24, giving the Knights a 34-15 halftime lead that would not be relinquished.

“Danielle got it going from the perimeter, which opened up the inside for Bianca,” King’s coach Eric Rasmussen said.

“The real key tonight was Lauren Thompson’s defense on (Vashon Island’s) Zelda Porter.”

Porter, Vashon Island’s leading scorer at 13.5 points per game, was held to one point and only one field-goal attempt by Thompson.

King’s faces Lynden Christian in the 1A Bi-District championship at 6 p.m. today at Mountlake Terrace High School.

And Lynden Christian is a familiar foe. King’s defeated the Lyncs in last year’s district and state title games. The Lyncs beat the Knights in last Saturday’s sub-district seeding game 49-37.

“Last time we didn’t make the 3 or 4 plays that decide a game, they ( Lynden Christian) hit the shots that we didn’t,” Rasmussen summed up.

“The goal was to be in this position, playing our best basketball … it will be a great chance to play a quality opponent leading up to state.”
