L. Stevens gets even with Cascade

LAKE STEVENS – Now that’s payback.

Lake Stevens avenged its first loss of last season Friday, winning its season-opening Western Conference North Division game by the same score, 5-3.

Lake Stevens owned a sparkling record of 7-0-1 last year until April when Cascade invaded the Vikings’ turf and snuck away with a 5-3 victory. The loss loomed large as the teams tied for second place in the division standings.

“It was kind of a big game,” Lake Stevens coach Scott Flanders said. “We’ve been waiting to get this one back.”

Kyle Warrington scored two goals and had an assist in his first varsity game for the Vikings. Ryan Warrington, Kyle’s twin brother, also seeing his first varsity action, assisted on Kyle’s first goal, a header.

Lake Stevens built a 5-1 lead in the 63rd minute when Eric Guenther, also playing in his first varsity game, scored on the left side of the net.

Not everything went right for Lake Stevens. Serious injuries sidelined two Lake Stevens defenders. Senior Stefan Welch and junior Ingi Huswick suffered “probably season-ending injuries,” Flanders said. Welch injured his knee and Huswick broke a leg.

“Those were two starters on defense,” Flanders said. “So, you know, tonight we won, but it was at a cost.”
