OAK HARBOR – Lake Stevens clinched its 13th consecutive league title Thursday night.

But Oak Harbor made the Vikings fight for it right up to the end in a 34-27 Western Conference North Division victory for the Vikings.

Oak Harbor held onto a 14-9 lead after five matches and managed to extend the lead to 20-12 after a Tony Nicolas pin in the 135-pound match.

In the next match, Josh Bergman gave Lake Stevens a much-needed victory by taking down his opponent in overtime.

The Wildcats got a boost when Brent Thompson had a major decision at 145 pounds. That put Oak Harbor up 24-15 for its biggest lead of the night.

Back-to-back pins by Jeff Nearing and Chris Anderson in the next two matches, however, extinguished Oak Harbor’s momentum and put the Vikings on top for the first time at 27-24.

A 6-1 decision by Ryan Anderson at 189 pounds iced the meet victory and the division title for Lake Stevens.

Oak Harbor coach Brian Farmer said it was real exciting to be in such a close match with Lake Stevens, but to lose like the Wildcats did was tough. “Our Philosophy is that we want to be in a position to win and we were there right up until the end. I’m very proud of the kids. It was just an exciting match.”
