Lake Stevens wins its season opener

BELLINGHAM – In what Lake Stevens High School baseball coach Rodger Anderson described as “a typical first game of the year,” the Vikings defeated Sehome 12-5 Monday in a non-conference contest.

Playing with those first-game jitters – and the wind and rain – the two teams combined for 13 walks and seven errors.

“The wind was blowing in pretty good and the ball wasn’t getting out too far,” Anderson said in reference to the weather and the lack of extra-base hits.

Lake Stevens (1-0) scored in the each of the first six innings and led 7-1 before Sehome (0-1) scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Vikings’ lead to two.

Lake Stevens’ Greg Varnum then broke the game open in the top of the sixth with a bases-clearing double.

Grant Kottsick added two RBI and went 2-for-3 for the Vikings, who are hoping to improve on last season’s fourth-place finish in districts.

“We’re hoping to improve and to compete for the (league) title,” Anderson said.
