Lakewood slams S. Whidbey

LAKEWOOD – New conference, same result.

Lakewood, which finished first ahead of South Whidbey in the North Cascades Conference last season, opened Cascade Conference play Monday with a 7-3 victory over the Falcons.

Tracy Wammack’s fourth-inning grand slam home run changed a 2-1 Cougar toe-hold to a commanding 6-1 advantage the Falcons were unable to surmount.

“This was a big win for us,” Lakewood coach Larry Delaney said. “We really wanted to get the opener – it just gets the regular season off on the right foot.

“South Whidbey is a tough team.”

Delaney praised Wammack’s game-breaking performance. “When he punched that (grand slam) out, it turned the game around,” Delaney said.

He also praised Ryan Martin’s showing on the mound: five innings, six strikeouts, three scattered hits.

“Ryan Martin did an outstanding job for us,” Delaney said. “He gave up one run, then battled back under less than ideal conditions and showed some maturity on the mound.”
