Lakewood, South Whidbey softball advance to state tournament

The Lakewood softball team is headed to state for just the second time in school history and the first time since 2001.

The Cougars (17-6) punched their ticket with back-to-back 2A Northwest District tournament victories last Wednesday. Lakewood earned a 9-6 nine-inning win over Lynden in the quarterfinals, then beat Cedarcrest 7-4 in the semifinals to secure a trip to Selah for the 2A state tournament. The Cougars placed second in district after a 6-2 loss to top-seeded Sehome in Friday’s title game.

South Whidbey (12-11) advanced to state for the third time in four years after winning back-to-back 1A Northwest District tournament elimination games Saturday. The Falcons routed Cedar Park Christian 15-0 and beat Nooksack Valley 8-1 to punch their ticket to Richland for the 1A state tournament.
