Landon Ferraro makes an appearance

The Tips are practicing at Lynnwood Ice Center this week as they’ve been kicked out of Comcast Arena by the circus, and the past two days a familiar face has joined the proceedings. Landon Ferraro, who captained the Tips last season, has skated with the team during practice in preparation for attending training camp with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. He heads out to the Traverse City prospects tournament Thursday.

Ferraro is technically eligible to return to Everett as an overager this season. However, he’s already signed a contract with the Red Wings and he’s old enough to play in the minors, so he’s not expected back. The Tips are acting like he’s not coming back as they have their three overage roster slots set. But one never knows.

Everett has four players who are expected back who are also heading to NHL camps. Winger Tyler Maxwell departed today to join up with the Minnesota Wild for the Traverse City tournament. Center Ryan Harrison (Vancouver) and winger Josh Birkholz (Florida) head out tomorrow. Goaltender Kent Simpson (Chicago) is bypassing rookie camp and headed straight to main camp next weekend, though he is unlikely to take part as he’s still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. Birkholz and Simpson were drafted by their respective NHL teams, Maxwell and Harrison are on free agent tryouts. None of the four are available for this weekend’s exhibition games in Kennewick.

Speaking of Simpson, there was a brief sighting of him on the ice in his full goalie gear at practice today. However, he was only on the ice for a short time and I didn’t see him spend any time in net. Nevertheless, it was the first time I’ve seen Simpson in full pads since training camp started, so it’s progress.

Lastly, a pair of 16-year-olds, center Ryan Chynoweth and defenseman Austin Adam, were sporting helmets without the full cages in practice today. Don’t know what that means for certain, but I’d have to say it’s a good sign for them making the team.
