Larsen rowing for U.S. team at 2007 Pan-American Games

Bjorn Larsen of Lake Stevens was named to the United States rowing team that will compete in the 2007 Pan-American Games to be held July 14-19 at the Ladoa Rowing Center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Larsen, a 2003 graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, will compete in the men’s lightweight four for the 27-member U.S. squad. Heats and repechages, or second chance races, take place July 14-16. Finals will be held the final three days of the games, July 17-19.

It will be the Marysville-Pilchuck High School alum’s third competition as a member of the national team. Larsen finished fifth in the lightweight quadruple sculls at the 2006 World Championships and 10th in the lightweight double sculls at the 2005 worlds.

Larsen was a member of the first-place lightweight double sculls team at the 2007 U.S. National Championships held June 21-23 at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. He won five gold medals at the 2003 nationals.

Ice skating

Everett group wins silver at Showcase for Skaters: The Everett-based Pacific Northwest Ice Theater, performing an interpretation of Seussical the Musical, won the silver medal at the 34th Annual Showcase for Skaters on June 9-10 at the Pickwick Ice Arena in Burbank, California.

The Everett group was also invited to skate at the Los Angeles Ice Theater’s 2007 Cabaret on Ice on June 8. Guest skaters included Evan Lysacek, 2007 U.S. National Men’s Champion; Mirai Nagasu 2007 U.S. National Junior Ladies Champion and 2007 Junior World’s Silver Medalist; as well as other U.S. National skaters.

The Pacific Northwest Ice Theater, founded by director Lisa Steffan in 2004, consists of fourteen skaters, ages ranging from six to fifty. Theater on ice, also known as ballet on ice, combines the dynamics of figure skating with the excitement of theater and dance.

The group practices at the Comcast Community Ice Rink at the Everett Events Center.

Track and field

Eleven from Snohomish Track Club advance to regionals: Amy-Eloise Neale and ten of her Snohomish Track Club teammates advanced to a regional meet based on their performance at the Pacific Northwest USA Track and Field (USATF) Junior Olympic Championships held June 30-July 1 at Chief Sealth High School in Seattle.

The top six athletes in each event advanced to the USATF Region 13 Junior Olympic Track and Field Championship to be held July 12-13 in Seattle. The local meet was gender and age specific, with athletes ages 8 to 18 competing in divisions divided by two-year intervals.

Competing in the Midget division, 11-year-old Neale, of Snohomish, won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes 27.25 seconds as well finishing first in the 1,500 (5:01.29) and 3,000 (11:33.51).

In the Mens Intermediate division, Christopher Rusnak of Snohomish placed fourth in the triple jump (40-1.25).

Ashtin Mott of Lake Stevens finished fourth in the 200 (22.53) and seventh in the 400 (51.38) in the Young Mens division. Brandon Kilpatrick of Snohomish advanced with a second-place finish in the pole vault (13-5.25). Marlyn Anderson of Snohomish will compete in two events at the regional after winning the shot put (50-6.26) and placing fourth in the discus (137-5).

Russ Anderson, younger brother of Maryln, finished second in the shot put (24-10.50) in the Youth Boys division and Ben Shepard of Granite Falls advanced with a fourth-place finish in the 200 (31.6).

In the Young Womens division, Lela Jewett of Snohomish finished second in the 400 hurdles (1:12.09) and Valan Calvo of Snohomish placed second in the pole vault (10-11.75).

Matt Werauch of Snohomish finished second in the javelin (53-10) in the Bantam Boys division. Briahna Gibson of Machias will compete in two events at regionals after finishing second in the 1,500 (5:50.67) and fifth in the 800 (2:59.63) in the Bantam Girls division.

Martial arts

Banghart wins two medals at ATA worlds: Becky Banghart of Everett found gold and bronze in Arkansas, winning the championship in Sparring and placing third in Traditional Forms at the American Taekwondo Association (ATA) 2007 World Championships held June 18-24 in Little Rock.

Banghart competed against nine finalists from around the world in the Womens 60 and over) 4th and 5th Degree Tournament of Champions.

The ATA World Championships attracted more than 20,000 spectators and athletes for seminars, testing and competition.

Soccer

NW Arsenal U-13 team competes at regional championship: The Northwest Arsenal boy’s under-13 soccer team got on track a little too late to advance out of pool play at the U.S. Soccer Western Regional Championship held June 18-24 in Las Vegas.

Forward Anthony Johnson of Marysville and Tanner Jones, a midfielder from Shoreline, led the NW Arsenal to a 2-1 victory over New Mexico in the team’s third and final game of the regional tournament. Johnson scored the first goal with an assist from Jones to put the Arsenal ahead 1-0. After New Mexico tied the score, Johnson returned by assisting Jones, who scored the game-winner in the final seconds of regulation.

NW Arsenal was shut out by Oregon 3-0 in its opening game of pool play and dropped a 2-1 decision to California South in its second.

The NW Arsenal, a Mountlake Terrace select team, advanced to the regional tournament by winning the 2007 Washington State Youth Soccer Association championship, defeating two-time defending champion WPFC 2-0, on March 18 at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

The remaining members of the NW Arsenal were: forward Ben Bell of Mount Vernon; forward Athony Coccaro, defender Josh Dickerson and midfielder Nick Scalzo of Seattle;goalkeeper Brenden George and forward Brendon Wheeler of Snohomish; defenders Eugene Holley and Andrew Newman of Shoreline; midfielder Chaz Jenkins of Marysville; midfielder Jack Lindley of Arlington; defender Mackie Merchant of Bothell; goalkeeper Andrew Wildfong of Woodinville; midfielder Henry Wingo of Lake Forest Park; and midfielder Derek Zimmerman of Pasco.

Chuck Granade was the head coach, assisted by Roger Levesque.
