League rival stops Coupeville at state

YAKIMA – Coupeville held a slight edge over La Conner going into the state playoffs Friday at the Yakima SunDome.

After the two teams split their regular-season meetings, Coupeville won a tiebreaker to earn the No. 1 seed from District 1.

But when the pair met in the quarterfinals Friday, it was La Conner (13-3 overall) which emerged with a 3-1 victory.

La Conner will play Goldendale in today’s semifinals. Coupeville (11-2) dropped into the consolation bracket and can still finish as high as fourth place.

2A state playoffs: At Yakima, King’s advanced to today’s semifinals with victories over Kiona-Benton and LaCenter. King’s defeated Kiona-Benton 3-2 in the first-round and knocked off LaCenter 3-0 in the quarterfinals at the SunDome. King’s will play Woodland in the semifinals.

3A state prelims: At Federal Way, Shorecrest’s Aydan Sarikaya just missed qualifying for the championship final in the 500-yard freestyle. She finished ninth in five minutes, 21.58 seconds and will swim in today’s consolation final at the King County Aquatics Center.
