Logue leads Knights to team title

EVERETT – The way Colin Logue sees it, one lap is a lot more fun than two, three or four.

Three years of moderate success running those nasty distance races convinced the Kamiak track athlete to try something different.

After running well in the 800 at the end of last season and in a 200 early this season, it seemed only natural to split the difference. The decision paid dividends on Friday at Goddard Stadium, when Logue won the 400-meter sprint at the Western Conference South Division meet to help the Knights win a division title for the first time in 14 seasons of competition.

“I decided to try the 200 and found out I’m a good sprinter,” said Logue, who anchored Kamiak’s 1,600 relay team to victory and finished seventh in the 200.

As for the 800?

“I ran one earlier this year, and it killed me,” Logue said.

Logue was just one of the many Knights to stand out during the two-day meet. Teammate Sean Beighton won the pole vault by clearing a meet-record 14 feet, 8 inches – more than two feet better than anyone else in the field. Senior Kyle Cho won the long jump and placed third in the triple jump. Sean Bucy, another senior, won the javelin with a hurl of 175 feet, 10 inches – just three inches off the meet record. Junior Jonathan Cooper won the 800 in 1:57.81.

The top nine finishers from Class 4A South Division teams will compete at the 4A Northwest District Track Meet on May 16 and 18 at Shoreline Stadium. The top six finishers among the 3A division teams are guaranteed spots in the 3A district tournament at Edmonds Stadium.

When Logue, Beighton, Cho and Bucy were freshmen, Kamiak coach Paul Kirkpatrick knew the talented class would be a force as seniors. Though Kirkpatrick lost two of his top runners to injury, the Knights proved his early assessment to be correct.

“We’ve got a great group of coaches who have worked hard,” said Kirkpatrick, who has been Kamiak’s head coach for seven seasons. “The kids have stuck with it through a tough year. We lost our fastest sprinter (Ramone Richmond) early in the year, and we had some other kids who couldn’t quite make it through the season.

“This is a true team win. We had a lot of kids who came through and stepped up.”

Kamiak scored 175 points to finish ahead of Mukilteo School District-rival Mariner (154 points).

Jerrel Grant won the 110 hurdles and finished second to Jackson’s Ali Al-Hussaini in the 300 hurdles. Al-Hussaini also placed second in the 110 hurdles to help the Timberwolves place third in the team standings.

Shorecrest’s Kevin Ramos set a new meet record with a time of 10.98 seconds in the 100 meters. The senior also won the 200 in 22.51 seconds.
