Loss to Blaine makes Granite Falls the No. 2 seed

Herald staff

MOUNT VERNON – Blaine defeated Granite Falls 7-1 Saturday to secure the top seed in District 1 heading into next weekend’s regional competition.

After defeating Granite Falls by the same score on Wednesday, Saturday’s victory gave the Borderites the Class 2A District 1 series.

Blaine’s fourth victory this year over its North Cascades rival was decided by Granite Falls’ defense more than it was won by Blaine’s offense. While Blaine recorded just five hits, three of Granite Falls’ five errors led directly to runs for its opponents.

Craig Anderson got things started for Blaine in the first inning, when he advanced to first after a throwing error. He got to second when another error was made in attempt to throw him out.

After Grant Sanders bunted safely, Laird Dickey singled to drive in both runners. Chris Kleman’s RBI single that followed put Granite Falls in a deficit that snowballed as the game went on.

“We really made the most of our hitting today,” Blaine coach Gary Clausen said. “All of our hits were useful – they either scored runs or advanced a runner.”

Dickey, who pitched Wednesday’s victory, drove in four of Blaine’s runs while going 2-for-2 at the plate.

Reflecting on his team’s inconsistent field play, Granite Falls coach Doug Engstrom remained optimistic about his squad’s prospects in the regionals.

“The errors killed us today,” he said. “Our pitching is solid, though, so if we can play better defense next weekend, we’ll be all right.”

Blaine, the top seed in District 1, next faces the No. 2 seed from District 3 on Saturday in the regional tournament in Bellingham.

Granite Falls, which earned the No. 2 seed in District 1, will face the top seed from District 4 in Chehalis on Saturday.

The winner of each four-team regional advances to state competition.
