SNOHOMISH – Joe Plucker had three fumbles in Snohomish’s game against Mountlake Terrace Friday, but it didn’t matter.
That’s because the Snohomish running back made up for it by rushing for 190 yards on just 12 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead Snohomish to a 28-6 Western Conference 4A victory.
“He’s getting better and better every week,” Snohomish coach Mark Perry.
Plucker helped Snohomish (3-0 in league, 4-0 overall) overcome an early 6-0 deficit. When Plucker scored a touchdown on a 30-yard run late in the first half, it proved to be the game-winner.
Snohomish running backs Tim Lockhart and Cory Geston added rushing touchdowns in the second half to clinch the victory. Lockhart had seven carries for 63 yards and Geston added 34 yards on nine carries. As a team, Snohomish racked up 305 yards on the ground.
“The offense is doing a great job when they don’t drop the ball,” Perry said.
Snohomish had five fumbles and lost three of them in the game.
In the first half, both teams had difficulty holding onto the ball in the rainy conditions. Snohomish lost two fumbles and Mountlake Terrace lost one.
Plucker fumbled on Snohomish’s first play and Mountlake Terrace recovered on the 35-yard line. After converting a fourth down, quarterback Mike Yalowicki had a 24-yard touchdown run to give Mountlake Terrace a 6-0 lead. Yalowicki ran up the middle on a quarterback draw, used a referee as a screen and then dashed into the end zone.
The Panthers got their first score after recovering a fumble on an errant pitch by Yalowicki on an option play late in the first quarter.
Eight plays later, Plucker raced down the sidelines 30 yards for a touchdown to take a one-point lead.
Snohomish took a 14-6 lead on Plucker’s second touchdown run with 2:36 left in the half.
The Panthers forced Mountlake Terrace to punt on its next possession, but Snohomish gave the ball back after another Plucker fumble with about 30 seconds left.
Mountlake Terrace (1-3, 1-3) was able to drive down to the 9-yard line and called a time out with three seconds left. Hawk coach Alex Barashkoff opted to go for a touchdown instead of a field goal on the final play of the half, but Mountlake Terrace’s reverse didn’t fool the Snohomish defense and resulted in a 2-yard loss as the half ended.
