… And this wasn’t an open practice. With training camp now it’s third week, a lot of players were given the morning off either because of injuries or for rest.
Most notable was the absence of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. No word from the team yet on why he sat out, but my guess is we’re going to get word that it was just to give him a bit of rest. Hasselbeck, who hadn’t missed a practice yet in training camp, was on the field for most of practice watching, and didn’t show signs of any obvious injury walking around.
Left tackle Walter Jones, who left yesterday’s practice early, was out again. Also missing from action were receivers Nate Burleson and Deion Branch, guard Grey Ruegamer, center Chris Spencer, offensive tackle Ray Willis, running backs Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett, cornerback Marcus Trufant, defensive ends Lawrence Jackson and Cory Redding, linebacker D.D. Lewis and kicker Olindo Mare.
And for those wanting more injury information than we’re getting, the simple fact is that NFL teams have no obligation to give regular updates or tell us the severity of injuries until the week of the first regular season game, so injury reports will sometimes be remain vague until then.
Rookie linebacker Aaron Curry made a few big plays today, including an interception in seven-on-seven drills that allowed him to show off his hands making the catch, and his speed on the return when he got to the sideline and took it to the end zone. He also had a knockdown of a pass at the line of scrimmage in the team portion of practice during a two-minute drill situation.
Safety Brian Russell also had a pick, his coming on the first play of the two-minute drill, and fellow safety Deon Grant came up big in a goal-line drill when he got to the quarterback untouched on a blitz (he didn’t hit him, of course).
The Seahawks cross Lake Washington for this evening’s practice, which is at 6:45 at Husky Stadium, and is open to the public.
