Mark Lowe was eating lunch Wednesday with several of the Seattle Mariners’ minor leaguers still in Peoria at extended spring training, and the topic of discussion was the performance of rookie Brandon Morrow the previous night at Safeco Field.
Morrow nervously allowed the first two hitters he faced reach base, then retired the next three. It reminded Lowe of his major league debut last year, when he walked the bases loaded before getting out of the inning without a run.
“I was telling the guys at luch about it,” Lowe said. “There’s nothing like the first time.”
Lowe has that feeling himself these days. He has resumed throwing nearly six months after surgery to repair an elbow injury that threatened his career. He played catch Monday and again Wednesday at Peoria, and will do it again Friday. His arm is responding so well that he may begin throwing back-to-back days soon, he said.
“Everything is feeling really, really good,” he said. “From the first throw it has felt fine. I’m not being timid with it and I’m not holding back a whole bunch. But I’m not over-doing it, either.”
Low probably will remain in Peoria the next three months rehabbing at the Mariners’ training facility. If his recovery goes well, he could return to pitching in July or August.
