Lynnwood’s Matzen hits game-winner in double OT

LYNNWOOD — Lynnwood’s Aaron Matzen hit a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining in double overtime to beat Washougal 57-55 on Friday.

“We knew they were a very tough 2A team,” said Lynnwood head coach Landon Porter. “Early on we weren’t hitting the shots and had to fight back.”

Simi Fajemisin and Geoff Meinken, Lynnwood’s two tallest players, were hindered with foul trouble early on and spent a lot of time on the bench. Matzen, Spencer Hunsinger and Scottie Hill stepped up their game to fill the void.

The Royals were behind 18-14 at halftime but a strong third quarter by Matzen kept them in the game. The junior scored 11 of his 22 points in the quarter.

“Matzen stepped up big for us,” said Porter. “He got in the mode of ‘I’m going to go after them.’”

The game went into overtime and Hunsinger tied the score on a 3-pointer with eight seconds left to force a second overtime.
