TACOMA – Leading by nine points with 5:49 to go in regulation, the Mariner boys basketball team seemed headed for a victory at the Class 4A state tournament.
But the Bethel Braves rallied, sent the contest into overtime and grabbed a 56-52 win, eliminating Mariner in a loser-out game Thursday at the Tacoma Dome.
Mariner (14-10) led 41-32 but Bethel (21-6) closed the fourth quarter with a 12-3 spurt and outscored Mariner 12-8 in the extra period.
Joey Dillon (16 points, seven rebounds) and Jerrel Grant (12 points, three assists) were the top scorers for Mariner.
Bethel’s Brandon McGee scored 19 points, and Andre Mayes made two key 3-point baskets down the stretch for the Braves.
