Fallout

Carl Everett smiled and clowned for the cameras. Mike Hargrove walked through the clubhouse and said hello to his designated hitter, then posted a lineup card with Everett’s name in it.

One day after Everett walked into Hargrove’s office, closed the door and screamed at the skipper for undisclosed issues, life was normal again in the Mariners’ clubhouse Wed-nesday afternoon.

“In the course of the season, that wouldn’t be out of the ordinary,” Hargrove said, referring to a clubhouse flap, not that it was the volatile Everett who threw it. “Every player has the right to come in to my office and say what he has to say.”

Hargrove wouldn’t discuss what Everett was upset about, although most speculation centered on the reduced playing time he will get after the arrival of Eduardo Perez in a trade last week. Perez will start at DH against left-handed pitching and Everett, a switch-hitter who has batted .161 against lefties, will start against right-handers.

“What I said and what Carl said is between us,” Hargrove said. “Things like that are not unusual over the course of a season. I’ve had other players do the same thing. Some players express themselves differently.”

Hargrove said he spoke with pitcher Gil Meche, who told reporters after Sunday’s game that he wasn’t happy to have been pulled after 87 pitches.

“I would not expect a pitcher to be taken out of a game and not be upset,” Hargrove said. “If I was in his place, I’d be upset, too.”

Reed out eight weeks: Center fielder Jeremy Reed had his broken right thumb examined by a hand specialist Wednesday and the report wasn’t any different than expected.

Reed needs surgery, which happens today, and will miss about eight weeks. Dr. Carleton Keck will install a plate in Reed’s thumb.

Reed broke the thumb Sunday when he made a dive for a fly ball that fell in right-center field.

Of note: Mike Morse also will have surgery today, performed by team orthopedist Dr. Edward Khalfayan, to repair the meniscus in his right knee. He’s expected to miss 4-6 weeks. … Pitcher Sean Green, on the disabled list because of severe back spasms, was much improved Wednesday. He was stricken after Sunday’s game and spent two nights in a nearby hospital. … Until Tuesday, when the Mariners lost a 5-1 lead to the Angels, they and the Tigers were the only American League teams that hadn’t lost a game in which they led by four or more runs. … Hall of Famer Dave Winfield threw out the ceremonial first pitch. He’s in Seattle as narrator of “Cooperstown to Benaroya Hall – Music of America’s Pastime.” … Today is an off day for the Mariners, who’ll spend it taking part in the annual Cystic Fibrosis golf tournament at Newcastle Golf Club.
