Mariner wins in shootout

EVERETT – A shootout was necessary for Mariner to defeat Mount Vernon 2-1 in a 4A District 1 boys soccer playoff game Tuesday at Goddard Stadium.

Mariner out-shot Mount Vernon 4-3 to advance to a winner-to-state, loser-out game against Lake Stevens at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Mount Vernon High School.

“Our keeper (Anthony Bravo) made two big saves in overtime,” said Mariner statistician Evie De Simone.

The Bulldogs’ Justin Burns scored the first goal of regulation on a header off a corner kick in the 14th minute. It took 29 minutes, but Maurader junior Nick De Simone evened the score in the 43rd minute.

Mariner coaches had scouted Mount Vernon earlier in the week. They saw Bulldog forward Esteban Padilla dominate that earlier game with his speed so they moved regular midfielder Evergreen State College-bound David Cohn to sweeper. “Cohn shut Padilla down,” Evie De Simone said.
