Mariners’ Brad Miller named American League player of the week

Prior to making his first appearance in left field last week, Brad Miller had a clear message.

“I’m a shortstop, no question,” Miller said Thursday.

Well whatever Miller is these days—shortstop, outfielder, designated hitter—he is certainly hitting well, and as a result was named American League player of the week Monday.

That being said, he realizes being in the lineup as a left fielder beats not playing.

Miller hit .429 with 4 home runs, 3 doubles, 5 RBI and 6 runs scored in six games last week, and had a .500 on base percentage and 1.643 OPS. Miller has three home runs in the Mariners’ past two games.

Miller has made it clear that he would prefer to still be a shortstop, but with Chris Taylor getting most of the playing time there, he is for now willing to do what it takes to get into the lineup.

“I’m a player; I don’t make the lineup,” he said. “I obviously want to be playing… whatever’s on my plate, I take it in stride and go get it. So I’m excited.”
