Mariners decline options on Lopez, Bedard, Branyan

The Seattle Mariners announced a series of roster moves on Wednesday. Here is the press release provided by the team.

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President &General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today that the Mariners have made the following roster moves.

Declined to exercise 2011 contract options on:

LHP Erik Bedard

DH Russell Branyan

INF Jose Lopez (is now eligible for salary arbitration).

Outrighted to AAA the contracts of:

LHP Ryan Feierabend (is eligible to be a six-year minor league free agent)

OF Ryan Langerhans (has declined the outright and elected free agency)

C Guillermo Quiroz (has declined the outright and elected free agency)

LHP Chris Seddon (can decline the outright and elect free agency)

RHP Sean White (can decline the outright and elect free agency)

Claimed off waivers:

RHP Brian Sweeney (by Arizona)

With today’s roster moves, the Mariners Major League, 40-man roster stands at 30 players.

• Bedard, 31, spent the season on the disabled list. He began the year on the 15-day DL recovering from left shoulder surgery and was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 19. He had additional surgery on his left shoulder on Aug. 6. Bedard was originally acquired via trade from Baltimore on Feb. 8, 2008. He re-signed with Seattle on Feb. 6, 2010.

• Branyan, who turns 35 Dec. 19, hit .215 (44×205) with 10 doubles and 15 home runs in 57 games with Seattle after being acquired via trade from the Cleveland Indians on June 26. Prior to the trade, he hit .263 with 9 doubles and 10 HR with the Indians.

• Lopez, who turns 27 Nov. 24, hit .239 with 29 doubles and 10 home runs and 58 RBI in 150 games this season. He led all MLB third baseman with 322 assists in his first season at the hot corner. Lopez is now a salary arbitration eligible player.

• Feierabend, 25, spent most of the 2010 season at AAA Tacoma. He underwent “Tommy John” surgery on March 4, 2009 and missed all of the 2009 season. In 2010, he posted a 4-7, 5.30 mark in 17 starts with the Rainiers. He was 1-0, 2.57 in 1 GS with AA West Tenn.

• Langerhans, 30, appeared in 48 games in two stints with the club after making the Opening Day roster. His .344 on-base percentage ranked 2nd on the team, collecting 24 walks in 132 plate appearances. Langerhans has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Mariners.

• Quiroz, 28, spent most of the season with AAA Tacoma and AA West Tenn before being selected from West Tenn on Sept. 14. He appeared in two games with Seattle, going 2×7 at the plate. In the minors this season combined to hit .286 (93×325) with 22 doubles, 2 triples, 7 home runs and 46 RBI in 96 games.

• Seddon, 27, split the season between Seattle and AAA Tacoma. He appeared in 14 games (all in relief) with Seattle after being selected from Tacoma on July 15. Seddon was a PCL All-Star after going 10-4, 3.39 ERA (38 ER, 101.0 IP) in 18 games (15 starts) with the Rainiers.

• Sweeney, 36, split the season between Seattle and AAA Tacoma after signing a minor league contract on April 16. After being selected from Tacoma on June 15, he was 1-2, 3.16 ERA (13 ER, 37.0 IP) in 24 relief appearances with Seattle.

• White, 29, made 38 appearances during three stints with the Mariners compiling an 0-1 record with a 5.24 ERA (20 ER, 34.1 IP). He missed the final month of the season with a sore right shoulder but posted a 2.70 ERA (4 ER, 13.1 IP) over his final 13 appearances.
