MARINERS MINOR LEAGUE REPORT: Dorman excels in Class AA Southern League

Rich Dorman is making something of his second chance in the Seattle Mariners organization.

The 29-year-old right-hander has been one of the best pitchers in the Class AA Southern League, and he’s a big reason the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx are near the top of their division.

Dorman, signed by the Mariners in February as a minor league free agent, is 6-1 with a 2.21 earned run average. His six victories and two complete games are tied for the league lead, he’s third in ERA, second with 63 strikeouts and tied for second with 712/3 innings pitched.

Dorman, drafted in 2000 by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, was orginally signed by the Mariners as a minor league free agent in 2002, when he went 5-6 with a 4.30 ERA in 15 starts with the Everett AquaSox.

He climbed as high as Class AAA Tacoma in the M’s organization, but became a free agent in 2007 and signed with the Marlins. He spent much of last year on the disabled list because of elbow inflammation and was released by the Marlins in the offseason.

The Mariners signed him again on Feb. 12 and he has been one of the best pitchers in the organization.

Dorman has eight quality starts this season, including seven of his past nine, and since April 25 he’s gone 5-0 with a 2.55 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 49 innings pitched.

The Diamond Jaxx entered Tuesday 34-24 and one game out of first place.

Right-hander Mumba Rivera, 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA and 10 saves this season, has allowed three earned runs in his past 111/3 innings and held opposing hitters to a .143 average.

Elsewhere around the Mariners’ minor league system:

Class AAA Tacoma Rainiers: Second baseman Tug Hulett is batting .268 and has hit safely in 18 of his past 19 games, batting .370 in that span with 10 RBI and nine extra-base hits.

Catcher Jeff Clement continues to hit well, batting .369 with 11 homers and 34 RBI. Outfielder Charlton Jimerson, who leads the Rainiers with 11 steals, went on the seven-day disabled list because of a toe injury.

Class A High Desert Mavericks: Outfielder Greg Halman entered Tuesday batting .272 with 16 home runs, 43 RBI and 20 steals. Second baseman Chris Minaker, an Edmonds-Woodway High School alum, was batting .275 and shortstop Carlos Truinfel had a .265 average. Truinfel was batting .381 against left-handed pitching.

Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers: Right-hander Phillippe Aumont was one of three Timber Rattlers named to the West Division team for the Midwest League All-Star Game.

Aumont is 3-3 with a 1.50 ERA, with 35 strikeouts in 36 innings. He pitched five shutout innings last Thursday at Kane County, allowing three hits and striking out six.

Second baseman Edilio Colina and shortstop Juan Diaz also were named to the All-Star game. Colina was batting .302 and Diaz .244.

Center fielder Maximo Mendez entered Tuesday with a 10-game hitting streak to lift his season average to .266.
