Mariners spring training

Today in camp

n Mariners vs. Cubs, 7:15 p.m. in Las Vegas on KOMO radio (1000 AM)

Right-hander Carlos Silva will start for the Mariners against Ted Lilly of the Cubs.

Thursday in camp

n A Mariners split squad tied the San Diego Padres 10-10 in Peoria.

The teams combined for 32 hits and six errors. San Diego used five of its starters in the game while Seattle used only two: catcher Kenji Johjima and utility player Willie Bloomquist.

The rest of the starters from both teams were en route to their final spring training games. The Padres left for San Diego for a pair of games against the Angels while Seattle flew to San Francisco for a night game before heading to Las Vegas to face the Chicago Cubs.

The game featured an hour-long sixth inning when San Diego scored six runs and Seattle scored four. The inning lasted so long that Mariners acting manager Jim Riggleman left before the seventh to catch his flight to Las Vegas.

Weather

n After sunshine and temperatures near 90 all week in Peoria, the Mariners will experience a big change today. It’ll still be sunny, but the high in Las Vegas will reach only 76, with the gametime temperature dropping as the sun goes down.

They said it

n “I want to see some clouds, some rain, some snow. I’ve been down here since October and I want to see some elements.”

Mariners manager John McLaren on his last day of spring training in Peoria, where he lives in the offseason.

They did it

n The Mariners flew the first 1,100 miles of the 55,000 that they’ll travel this year, flying Thursday from Phoenix to San Francisco for the exhibition against the Giants, then to Las Vegas for games tonight and Saturday against the Cubs. They’ll fly from Vegas to Seattle after Saturday’s game.
