A daily look at the Seattle Mariners in spring training.

Tuesday in camp

The Mariners worked a second time on popups, relays and cutoffs in a short morning workout. They were off the field in time for their annual golf tournament Tuesday afternoon against the San Diego Padres.

Today in camp

After 13 days of workouts, the Mariners finally play a game today. They’ll face the San Diego Padres in an 11-inning B game this morning on the Padres’ side of the Peoria Sports Complex. Gil Meche will start on the mound for the Mariners, followed by Bobby Madritsch, Jorge Campillo, Cha Seung Baek, Nate Bland, Jon Huber, Jared Thomas and Rick Guttormson.

On the trainer’s table

Outfielder Chris Snelling underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, and he’s expected to miss about six weeks.

First baseman/designated hitter Bucky Jacobsen, on an every-other-day schedule to alleviate pain in his surgically repaired right knee, took batting practice.

Catcher Wiki Gonzalez didn’t practice Tuesday because of a mild groin strain, and his status is listed as day-to-day.

Weather report

Sunny and 74. Sorry Snohomish County.

They said it

“Guys like Bret (Boone), you just have to tell them, ‘You DO have the day off, no arguments.’ They usually thank you the next day.”

Manager Mike Hargrove on giving days off to veteran players such as Boone, who usually protests when he’s not in the lineup.

They did it

There’s a white van somewhere in Peoria with a baseball-sized dent in its roof. Mariners catcher Miguel Olivo launched a high drive in batting practice Tuesday that cleared the left-field fence and bounced off the roof of the van, which was passing by on a nearby street.
