Birthday party

Safeco Field officially turns five years old today, and the Mariners will observe the fifth anniversary of their first game at the stadium.

The first 20,000 fans tonight will receive a fifth-anniversary poster.

Since July 15, 1999, when the Mariners played the San Diego Padres in the first major league game at Safeco, 16,723,007 fans have watched 407 regular-season Mariners games. In addition, the M’s have played nine postseason games and six exhibitions, and the stadium hosted three days of All-Star Game events in 2001.

Roster move: The Mariners’ 25-man roster is one short of capacity, and they’re expected to make at least one move before tonight’s game.

The M’s, who sent pitcher Matt Thornton to Class AAA Tacoma last weekend, probably will replace him with another pitcher.

And, if catcher Miguel Olivo checks out healthy after his two rehab games with the Everett AquaSox, he could be activated from the disabled list. If that happens, the M’s probably would send veteran backup Pat Borders back to Class AAA Tacoma.
