Cleared to throw: Right-handed pitcher Paul Abbott, on the disabled list since Wednesday because of inflammation in his right shoulder, is expected to start throwing again this week.
Abbott underwent a strenuous workout Saturday to test his strength and endurance and felt no discomfort.
Trainer Rick Griffin said Abbott will throw for the first time Tuesday in Toronto, starting from a distance of 60-90 feet for 10-12 minutes. If all goes well, Abbott should begin pitching off a mound when the team returns home May 21.
First things first: Lou Piniella, asked how easy it is to steal bases on Pedro Martinez.
“You’ve got to get on base first,” Piniella said. “That makes it easier to run on him.”
The Mariners stole two Sunday, by Ichiro Suzuki and Luis Ugueto.
Regaining the touch: Because he relies on breaking pitches and pinpoint control as opposed to sheer power, John Halama knows he can make hitters look clueless.
He also can look bad himself when he loses his feel on the mound, but Halama says it’s always been a temporary situation.
“I’m the type of guy when things aren’t going good, I can find it also. My mechanics are pretty smooth,” said Halama, who shut out the Red Sox for 6 1/3innings Saturday night in the Mariners’ 3-1 victory. “It’s just a matter of when am I going to get into that rhythm? A guy with my type of mechanics, when I get into that rhythm it’s kind of hard to get out of it because it’s so slow and deliberate.”
Pink chair: A pink chair sat empty in both the Mariners and Red Sox bullpens Sunday as part of baseball’s support of breast cancer awareness. Every home and visiting bullpen in the majors Sunday had a pink chair.
