MARYSVILLE — Varsity sports at Marysville Getchell High School will begin in the fall after all.
The Marysville School Board voted unanimously at their Tuesday night meeting to reinstate a plan to start varsity sports at the school that opened in September.
The board made the decision after hearing Superintendent Larry Nyland report that the district’s financial picture was less bleak than originally projected due to stronger midyear enrollment and the result of cuts that were put in place beginning in January.
The Marysville School District reported that delaying the start of varsity sports would save $576,000 after the district was faced with about a $2 million shortfall.
The board voted Jan. 10 to postpone the start of varsity sports at the new high school until the 2012-13 school year.
District budgets for next year need to be decided before May 15, the state deadline for renewing individual teacher contracts.
