VANCOUVER, Wash. – Pitcher Riley Fritz tossed a two-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Marysville Little League All-Stars opened the Western Regional Majors (11-12) softball tournament with a 3-1 victory over Pendleton, Ore., on Sunday.

Fritz pitched all six innings, walking just two and giving up a single-first inning run. “She was just unbelievable,” said Marysville manager Marty Martinis.

Marysville scored twice in the first inning, including an RBI hit by catcher Megan Bombach, and added another run in the second in the game at the Fort Vancouver Little League complex.

“Getting by this team in the first game – and they’re the best team I’ve seen down here – was huge, just huge,” Martinis said. “I knew it was going to be tough. We had to manufacture a couple of runs, and then our defense was tight again.

“Our catcher, Meagan Bombach, was great, calling the game, blocking pitches and she’s got an arm like a cannon. She’s the real deal,” he added.

Marysville continues in the winners bracket at 3:30 p.m. today against Montana, which defeated Alaska in its opening game.
