EDMONDS – Kelsey Larson and Courtney Hughes each scored goals as Meadowdale handed Edmonds-Woodway its first girls soccer loss of the season, 2-1 Tuesday at Edmonds Stadium.

The Mavericks, who were playing their last Western Conference South Division regular season game, knocked E-W out of a first-place tie and remained tied with Shorewood for the division lead. However, Shorewood has one regular season game remaining Thursday against Mountlake Terrace.

The victory also gave Meadowdale a bye in the first round of the Class 3A Northwest District tournament, which begins Thursday. The Mavericks will open district play Saturday against Thursday’s Sehome vs. Burlington-Edison winner at 5:30 p.m. at Bellingham Civic Stadium.

“This rivalry goes back long way,” said Meadowdale coach Mike Bartley. “They were playing for first place and we were playing for a higher seed.

“My girls were very excited play this game. They came out pumped.

“I went with the older players, the junors and seniors, and they came through.

“We approached tonight like a playoff game.”

Bartley said his team didn’t want to have to play a loser-out district game on Thursday.
