Meadowdale’s Laws wins 3A title

YAKIMA – Meadowdale’s John Laws won the individual title and Lakeside of Seattle claimed team honors during the final round of the Class 3A state boys golf tournament on Tuesday at Apple Tree Golf Course.

Laws, a senior, followed his opening-round 65, 7 under par, with a 71 for a two-shot victory over Lakeside’s Reed Rader, who closed with a 67.

Lynnwood’s Austin Beatty shot a 76 to finish in seventh place.

In the team competition, Mount Si was a close second to Lakeside, with the Wildcats totaling 77.5 points to the Lions’ 79.5.

Class 4A tournament: At Yakima, Gregg LaVoie of Pasco overcame blustery conditions to shoot a 4-over-par 76 Tuesday to win the state high school Class 4A boys golf tournament at Meadow Springs Country Club. LaVoie, a senior, finished with a 3-over-par total of 147 to edge Cody Upham of Mountain View by one stroke. Jackson’s Mike Hansen and L.B. Stave shot a 78 and 77, respectively, to propel the Timberwolves to a third-place team finish. Auburn- Riverside won the team title with 70 points with Kamiakin second with 61 and Jackson third with 59.5.

Class 2A tournament: At Sunnyside, Senior Chad Carlson of Goldendale, a four-time state tournament qualifier, closed his prep career with a 70 on a windy day to capture the state high school Class 2A boys championship at The Course at Black Rock Creek. Carlson entered the day in second place, one stroke behind Shane Magnuson of Cascade. Carlson finished with a two-day total of 145. Magnuson stumbled to a 77 and finished third, one stroke behind teammate Jake Easterly, the 2000 individual champion, who had a 72 on Tuesday and 150 for the event. Magnuson and Easterly’s combined efforts were enough for Cascade to capture the team title with 45 points, just ahead of Chewelah, which had 43.5.

Class A tournament: At Pasco, Liberty sophomore Craig Leslie carded a one-under par 71 for a two-day total of 140. Leslie trailed day-one leader Elijah Perkins of Royal City by one shot at the Sun Willows Golf Course. Perkins had a second-round 75 to finish in second place at 143.

Class B tournament: At Pasco, Curlew senior Mel Garrison shot a 37 on both the front and back nines for a final round of 74. Garrison who finished the tournament at 9-over par 153, was tied for fifth going into Tuesday’s final round after shooting a 7-over par 79, but finished just two strokes off par on the second day to top the leaderboard.
