Mill Creek Little League softball team wins state title

The squad is headed to Southern California for the regionals

The major-division softball team from Mill Creek Little League is headed to Southern California.

The 12-year-olds romped through the Washington State Tournament, which concluded Sunday in Poulsbo. Mill Creek posted a 5-0 record in the double-elimination tournament, outscoring its opponents 52-3 in the process. Mill Creek defeated Redmond West/North 5-0 Sunday in the championship game.

Mill Creek advances to the West Region Tournament, which takes place July 20-26 in San Bernardino, California.

Mill Creek’s roster includes Addison Bale, Kyla Conant, Elena Eigner, Cael Hare, Kiana Holden, Leneyah Mitchell, Gabrielle Raysbrook, Yanina Sherwood, Allie Thomsen, Emery Tulio, Kaelyn Van Duzer, Kendal Westman and Reese Westman. The team is coached by Larri Werner.

Mitchell 12th at World Roller Games

Keaton Mitchell, an 18-year-old from Lynnwood, placed 12th in Senior Men’s Figures at the 2019 World Roller Games last Thursday in Barcelona, Spain. Mitchell, competing at the senior level for the first time, finished with a score of 120.40. The winner was Davide Arminchiardi of Italy, who finished with a score of 161.90.

Lynnwood grad throws no-hitter

Lynnwood High School graduate Jacob Goudzwaard threw a no-hitter for the Washington Rush Showcase U-18 team at the Papa’s Pizza Invitational Tournament on June 27 in Eugene, Oregon. Goudzwaard, who just finished his freshman season at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, had a perfect game through 6 1/3 innings before hitting a batter. He finished with no walks and 11 strikeouts in the 7-0 victory over NW Stars.

Newman sweeps pickleball tournament titles

South Whidbey High School graduate Riley Newman swept all three divisions he entered at the 2019 Pickleball Canada National Tournament held June 27-30 in Kingston, Ontario. Newman won gold in the Men’s Open Division, teamed with Steve Deakin to take gold in the Men’s Doubles Open Division, then teamed with Catherine Parenteau to win gold in the Mixed Doubles Open Division.

TriMonroe Triathlon results

The TriMonroe Triathlon, part of the USA Triathlon Junior Elite Series, took place June 29 at Lake Tye Park in Monroe. The race, which featured 236 athletes from all 50 states and four countries, is a qualifier for the USAT Youth and Elite National Championships, which take place Aug. 3-4 in West Chester, Ohio. The winners were: Youth Girls (ages 13-15), Clara James-Heer of Michigan; Youth Boys, Steven Cartwright of Florida; Junior Women (ages 16-19), Amber Schlebusch of South Africa; Junior Men, Drew Shellenberger of Indiana.
